MD5 checksum

  1. 1. Generate.

    Open Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities).

    Change directory (cd) to the folder containing the file requiring a checksum value.

    Type the following at the Terminal prompt:
    openssl md5 [fileName]

    Example command to calculate the MD5 checksum of the renameIT for OSX:
    openssl md5 renameIT.dmg

    The md5 digest is displayed as: MD5([fileName])= [checksum amount]. Example:
    MD5(renameIT.dmg) = f571943e971191229f83d17dd1d9be37

    2. Compare.

    Compare the checksum generated in step 1 with the checksum provided below:
    MD5 checksum of renameIT.dmg - f571943e971191229f83d17dd1d9be37
